It's toxicitiy is known but exaggerated in the context of the document. You simply can't make enough of it fast enough in the way described for use as a weapon. The ambient concentration can't be made high enough without people noticing it. And while the noise does get deadened after some exposure, H2S simply can't be missed when it is initially evolved. Generally speaking, deaths caused by H2S poisoning have usually occured when a sewage worker or workers are trapped in area where a huge volume has been built up through natural microbial action and trapped. Doesn't happen often, because the workers know the hazard and there's usually a crew pumping good air into any enclosed underground areas for just those reasons.
